Description
Dunkerton House was built c.1890 for the mine manager of Dunkerton Colliery, which was then situated in the valley a few miles away. It occupies a south facing position with far reaching views across farmland, hills and as far as the Westbury White Horse in the distance. A much loved family home which is evident in the current owners having lived here for 30 years and it only selling three times in the last 57 years. The five bedroom detached property has stone elevations below a tiled roof and has been improved over the years with the addition of a beautifully, sunny conservatory and a new roof added when the roof extension comprising of a 5th bedroom and bathroom was added. This was carried out using a local architect and built to a high specification by Biggs the renowned builders. Recently the lounge windows have all been replaced with UPVC sash windows to retain the character of the house. The outbuildings were originally the stables, now used as a garage, workshop and car port and the old pigsties are used as wood stores for the open fire.
You enter into an entrance lobby where you are greeted by floor to ceiling storage cupboards, useful for shoes and coats, and a door leading you into the hallway. The hallway provides access to the sitting room, dining room, kitchen, sun room and stairs to the first floor. The sitting room is a grand and light room 27’ in length with triple aspect windows and large bay to the rear aspect overlooking the garden. You also find a feature open fireplace with Bath stone hearth and surround. The kitchen is fitted with modern wall and floor units with worktop, inset sink, integrated dishwasher, oven and extractor overhead. A door leads you to a useful utility room with side access to the front of the house, separate WC and utility area with space for fridge, freezer, washing machine and dryer.
The dining room is a good size with window to the side aspect and sliding glazed doors opening up onto the sun room. The sun room is a very relaxing place to be with lovely views over the garden and beyond with wooden parquet flooring throughout. Stairs lead up to the first floor landing which provides access to all four double bedrooms and family bathroom. All bedrooms offer spacious proportions with the two to the rear aspect also providing far reaching elevated views. The bathroom is spacious with walk-in shower cubicle, bath, washbasin and WC. Stairs lead up to the second floor where you find a good size double bedroom with ample eaves storage and a further bathroom with bath and shower overhead, washbasin and WC.
Externally the southerly aspect gardens extend to 0.65 acre in size and are clearly much loved and well tended. The garden encircles the house and has many aspects to it with a vegetable patch area, leading to a stone laid seating area with nearby water well. You approach the rear across the lawn and beneath a large chestnut tree to the hedgerow rear boundary providing views across neighbouring farmland. To the rear of the house is a stone laid patio seating area which can be accessed from the sun room and a wooden shed in the corner of the plot. To the front of the property is a stone shingle driveway with parking for numerous vehicles with access to a stone built garage/workshop and car port. Potential here to create a separate annex for a dependant relative or guest accommodation if required. A five bar wooden gate provides access to the lane leading back to the main road.
